Orthman Shaftless Screw Conveyors are built for products that defeat a conventional shafted screw. The continuous-helix screw rides directly on a replaceable trough liner, which eliminates hanger bearing supports entirely — a common wear point and failure risk in standard conveyors.

Because the design removes the center pipe, there’s no place for wet, sticky material to build up or for stringy product to wrap and bind. The result is a fully enclosed, self-clearing conveyor with full product clean-out, built for continuous duty in demanding sludge, bio-solid, and bulk-handling applications.

What is a shaftless screw conveyor?

A shaftless screw conveyor moves material with a continuous helix that has no center pipe or shaft. The flighting rides on a replaceable liner along the bottom of the housing, eliminating hanger bearings and a tail shaft. This design handles difficult materials that would jam a conventional shafted screw.

What materials are shaftless screw conveyors best for?

They excel with wet, sticky, stringy, and odd-lump-size materials that wrap around or build up on a standard center-pipe screw. Typical uses include industrial sludges and bio-solids, wastewater treatment, animal processing, pulp and paper, recycling, plastics, and bulk powders and granules.

Why does removing the center pipe matter?

On a conventional screw, the center pipe is where wet, sticky products build up and stringy products wrap. Designing it out removes those failure points, allows full product clean-out, and lets the conveyor handle varying lump sizes with less maintenance.

Can a shaftless screw conveyor dewater or drain liquids?

Yes. Using a perforated trough liner with a drip pan, the conveyor can dewater or drain liquids as it moves material. With every revolution the flighting clears debris from the perforations, keeping the holes open and the system draining reliably.

Does a shaftless screw conveyor need hanger bearings?

No. The continuous helix rides directly on a replaceable liner at the bottom of the housing, so no hanger bearing supports are required. Removing them eliminates common wear points and obstructions in the material path, which is a key reason the design handles difficult products so well.
